Automating Cargo Vehicle Parking at Bengaluru International Airport
India's First Fully Automated Cargo Parking System
The Challenge
International airports handle thousands of vehicles carrying domestic and international cargo 24x7. The parking processes of these vehicles involve complex physical operations and high-level coordination between various stakeholders. The challenge for the client was to manage high-volume, high-coordination commercial traffic across:
- 500 slots for light commercial vehicles (LCVs) and heavy commercial vehicles (HCVs)
- ~2,500 vehicle entries/exits daily
- 3 acres of parking area
- 6 access points
- Multiple stakeholders: entry-exit, cargo terminal, and parking space operators working 24x7
The Solution
We fully automated the vehicle entry and exit process, including on-site management.
Entry and On-Site Management
- Hardware Integration: Centralized software sends direct commands to 6 physical boom barriers to control vehicle access.
- Instant Credentials: Drivers are issued instant, QR-code-based parking cards upon arrival to track entry and exit logs.
- Driver Amenities: Integrated Point of Sale (POS) terminals allow drivers to pay for and access ancillary services, including dormitory and washroom facilities. Transactions are processed via cloud-integrated swipe machines supporting card and touchless UPI QR codes.
Automated Exit Process
When a terminal manager requests a specific vehicle to a loading bay, the system triggers coordinated, localized communication channels:
- Direct notifications are sent to the driver via SMS and an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system.
- Audio announcements are broadcasted across the facility's Public Address (PA) system.
- Vehicle details are flashed visually onto large LED screens across the site.
Key Integration
Seamless data and financial flows were achieved by integrating three vital facility components:
- Cargo Terminal Operations: Synchronizing bay demands directly with vehicle parking queue
- Payment Gateways: Providing frictionless financial infrastructure supporting cash, card, and UPI options
- Access Control Systems: Connecting entry/exit validation software directly to automated boom barriers
The Results
A fully automated, centrally monitored system that solved challenges related to speed, payment friction, communication delays, and error/manipulation risk at scale, supported by 24x7 coverage and robust platform stability.
