Single Source of Truth and Single Pane of Glass
Hello there!
Did you know about two of the most popular "power phrases" in modern operations and IT?
When you use these two phrases, you’re basically speaking CXO language: Single Source of Truth and Single Pane of Glass
They sound like they mean the same thing. Like “having everything in one place.” But they actually solve two completely different problems and it’s important for you to know about them if you care about operations.
One is about data integrity (The Truth), and the other is about user experience (The View). The two concepts can be easily mistaken so let’s dig deeper.
Single Source of Truth
This means having one authoritative, trusted source of data that everyone relies on. Your organization now doesn’t have duplicate records, conflicting information, or data inconsistency. Example: If you need to know a contractor's start date, there isn't one date in HR and a different date in the security system; there is only one authoritative record.
The concept has its origin in Information Systems Theory and Database Administration. Businesses moving from paper to digital realized that having the same data in two different systems led to "data silos" and errors.
It asks: Is the data correct?
The main goal of “the Truth” is to ensure everyone in the organization is making decisions based on the same, accurate data.
Single Pane of Glass
A Single Pane of Glass is one unified dashboard/interface to view and manage multiple systems. It gets rid of too many dashboards/screens/tools. Example: You might have ten different security systems (access control, CCTV, fire alarms), but the security officer only looks at one monitor to see everything.
This concept has its origin in IT Infrastructure Monitoring and Network Operations Centers (NOCs). In the old days, technicians had to run between different "panes of glass" (monitors) to see what was happening.
It asks: Can I see the data easily?
The main goal of “the Glass” is to provide unified visibility, situational awareness, and reduce “dashboard fatigue.”
In one line:
a) Single Source of Truth = one trusted dataset
b) Single Pane of Glass = one unified operational view
Which of these do you think is harder for a company to achieve: the "Truth" or the "Glass"?
The Glass is easier. A beautiful dashboard can be built in weeks. Clean data is extremely hard to achieve and takes years. And in physical operations, many companies never fully get there. Why?
The Glass just shows you what's there. It’s mainly a dashboard aggregation or a visibility/interface problem.
The Truth requires harder work. Workflow ownership, data consistency, real-time synchronization, policy enforcement, identity integrity, real integration, and so on.
Sigh! Why does life have to be so hard? I need to snack on sunflower seeds NOW.
